Celius Dougherty

In collaboration with the Schubert Club of St. Paul, I had the great pleasure of collaborating with colleagues in presenting a unique look into the life of Minnesota native Celius Dougherty.

It was an absolute joy to explore and share this artist’s life and work through his correspondences  held at the Schubert Club, his manuscripts which are held at the University of Minnesota, and his songs – Dougherty’s favorite medium.

This (very) short clip is from the 1985 documentary “Dougherty & Ruzicka,” and I love it.

This American composer/pianist/accompanist led a truly remarkable life: premiering two-piano works of Stravinsky, Schoenberg and Hindemith, accompanying singers like Eva Gauthier, Povla Frijsh, and Alexander Kipnis, as well as composing over 200 songs.

Take a look at these two programs: filled with letters, reviews, and videos (like the one above!)

Sing, Poet!      May We hear him again
